University of Cincinnati Shutters DEI Programs in Response to New Ohio Law
CINCINNATI, Ohio — June 25, 2025 The University of Cincinnati (UC) has announced the immediate closure of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and identity-based campus centers to comply with Ohio's Senate Bill 1, which takes effect on June 27, 2025. This legislation bans DEI initiatives at public colleges and prohibits faculty strikes, among other provisions .
UC President Neville Pinto stated that the university's central Equity & Inclusion Office and four identity centers—including Ethnic Programs & Services, the LGBTQ Center, and the Women's Center—will cease operations immediately. The African American Cultural & Resource Center will be renamed "The Cultural Center" and repurposed to serve all students.
The decision has sparked protests from students and faculty, who argue that the closures undermine support for marginalized communities. During a recent Board of Trustees meeting, demonstrators expressed their opposition, with some faculty members voicing concerns about the university's direction. Trustee J. Phillip Holloman voted against the policy changes, describing them as an overreach influenced by political agendas.
In response to the closures, UC plans to introduce new programming through its Center for Student Involvement, aiming to foster student success and engagement. Dr. Bleuzette Marshall, formerly leading DEI efforts, will head a new unit focused on ethics, compliance, and community impact.
Senate Bill 1, signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine on March 28, 2025, mandates significant changes to Ohio's higher education system, including the elimination of DEI programs and the introduction of a mandatory civics course for all bachelor's degree students by 2030 .
