Indiana Freezes Tuition at All Public Colleges Through 2027 to Boost Affordability

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — June 25, 2025 In a landmark effort to make higher education more affordable, Indiana Governor Mike Braun has announced that all 15 of the state’s public colleges and universities will freeze in-state undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees for the 2025–2026 and 2026–2027 academic years. This coordinated freeze—spanning major institutions like Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State, and Ivy Tech—marks the first time in over a decade that all campuses will simultaneously hold tuition steady.

The move comes as a response to both rising college costs and a decline in enrollment across the state. “We want students to have one less worry when it comes to pursuing a degree,” Braun stated, emphasizing that college affordability is essential to building Indiana’s future workforce.

Student leaders have expressed support, with Samantha Fleischaker of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education noting that the freeze helps ensure access for students “of all backgrounds, all ZIP codes, and all walks of life.”

The announcement follows recent state budget adjustments, including a 5% funding cut to public institutions aimed at addressing a $2 billion shortfall. Despite the financial tightening, the tuition freeze is being positioned as a strategic investment in student opportunity and long-term economic growth.

Modeled in part after Purdue University’s long-standing tuition freeze, the initiative is expected to strengthen Indiana’s higher education system and provide greater stability for students and families across the state.
