Kent State University to Close LGBTQ+, Multicultural, and Women's Centers in Response to State Law
KENT, OH — June 2, 2025 Kent State University has announced the closure of its LGBTQ+, Multicultural, and Women's Centers to comply with Ohio's Senate Bill 83, which restricts diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at public universities. The law, signed by Governor Mike DeWine in March 2025, mandates the elimination of DEI programs and related offices by September.
In response, Kent State is restructuring its support services, integrating them into the Division of People, Culture, and Belonging, established in 2023. This division, formed by merging the university's DEI and human resources departments, aims to continue offering workshops and training sessions on topics like bias recognition and inclusive practices, albeit under a different framework.
The closures have sparked concern among students and faculty who rely on these centers for community support and resources. Critics argue that dismantling these dedicated spaces undermines efforts to create an inclusive campus environment and may negatively impact student well-being.
Kent State's decision aligns with actions taken by other Ohio public universities, such as Ohio State University, which have also begun scaling back or eliminating DEI offices in anticipation of the law's enforcement. Conversely, institutions like Ohio University have opted to maintain their DEI programs until the legislation is fully enacted.
As the September deadline approaches, universities across Ohio are navigating the challenges of adhering to the new legal requirements while striving to support their diverse student populations.
