Governor Braun Backs IU President Amid Plagiarism Claims

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- August 19, 2025 Indiana Governor Mike Braun publicly voiced strong support for Indiana University President Pamela Whitten on Monday, even as she faces resurfaced allegations of plagiarism. Braun praised Whitten's leadership in streamlining university operations and reducing the number of degree programs, describing these efficiency-driven reforms as signs of effective stewardship. His endorsement is particularly notable given his recent overhaul of the IU Board of Trustees, now fully under his control, which could shield Whitten from pressure to resign.

The plagiarism charges emerged in January, when The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that Whitten's 1996 doctoral dissertation from the University of Kansas contained minor instances of unattributed copying. IU later engaged an independent law firm, which concluded the allegations lacked merit.

Last week, however, new evidence surfaced suggesting more extensive copying than previously reported. Asked about the developments, Braun said he had a “great conversation” with Whitten but noted that the allegations came up “very briefly.” He emphasized his expectation that the board would “act swiftly” and “do the right thing” if the claims are substantiated - even though he deferred to the trustees to determine the truth.

Whitten and IU have not commented on the renewed scrutiny. With faculty and student criticism mounting, Braun’s backing may prove crucial as the scandal unfolds.
