Michigan State University Announces Job Cuts Amid Financial Challenges

ANN ARBOR, MI — June 30, 2025 Michigan State University (MSU) President Kevin Guskiewicz announced on June 30, 2025, that the university will implement job cuts across various departments due to significant financial difficulties. In a letter to staff, Guskiewicz stated that the reductions will vary by college and unit, though the exact number of positions affected has not been disclosed.

The university is facing a 9% budget reduction, attributed to decreased federal funding. In addition to workforce reductions, MSU plans to cut expenses related to travel, vendor contracts, and programs deemed non-essential. Guskiewicz emphasized the necessity of these measures to navigate the institution's current challenges and future opportunities.

MSU has committed to working with employee unions and may offer voluntary retirement incentives. The university also plans to provide outplacement services to support affected staff members during the transition.

This announcement follows similar financial challenges faced by other institutions, such as Siena Heights University, which recently announced its closure. The situation at MSU reflects broader concerns about the financial stability of higher education institutions amid changing funding landscapes.
